Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship India 2026-27: Application Form, Eligibility, Last Date
The Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship is one of the most competitive fully funded study-abroad opportunities available to Indian students. Offered by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the programme can cover tuition, a monthly living allowance and round-trip airfare while allowing selected students to study at Japanese universities or specialist institutions.
For Indian applicants, however, MEXT is not one single scholarship with one eligibility rule. The Embassy Recommendation route includes different categories for Research Students, Undergraduate Students, College of Technology (KOSEN) Students and Specialized Training College Students. Each category has its own academic threshold, age condition, written examination pattern and application process.

The timing also needs to be understood correctly. The applications handled in India during April and May 2026 were for the MEXT 2027 intake, with selected students travelling to Japan in 2027. Research Student applications closed on May 15, 2026, while Undergraduate, KOSEN and Specialized Training College applications closed on May 25, 2026. These 2027-entry application windows are now closed.

Students planning for the next MEXT Embassy Recommendation cycle should watch the Embassy of Japan in India and the Japanese Consulate responsible for their state. MEXT recruitment normally begins well before the year in which the student travels to Japan.

| Preparatory education | Normally included where prescribed | Japanese preparatory education may be provided when required |
Some designated regions in Japan can attract a small additional regional allowance. Students should also remember that personal travel, some airport-related costs, baggage, insurance and other expenses outside MEXT’s specified coverage may remain their responsibility.
MEXT Scholarship Application Form and Documents
Applicants must use the forms for the correct scholarship year. The Embassy of Japan specifically warns students not to submit previous-year application forms.
- MEXT application form for the relevant category and year
- Academic transcripts and school or university certificates required for the category
- Graduation certificate or certificate of prospective graduation, where applicable
- Recommendation letter in the prescribed or accepted format
- Certificate of Health in the MEXT format
- Recent photograph meeting the application specifications
- For Research Students, Field of Study and Research Plan and later placement-related documents
- Any category-specific subject, major or direct-placement form requested in the guidelines
How to Apply for MEXT Scholarship India 2026-27
The application process differs between Research Students and the other three major India categories. Students should follow the route for their own scholarship type rather than sending documents directly to MEXT in Japan.
- Choose the correct MEXT category: Decide whether you are applying as a Research Student, Undergraduate Student, KOSEN Student or Specialized Training College Student. Check age, marks and academic background before downloading forms.
- Read the current-year guidelines: Use only the application guidelines and forms issued for the relevant MEXT intake. Old forms can lead to rejection.
- Identify the Japanese Mission responsible for your state: Undergraduate, KOSEN and STC applicants submit through the Embassy or Consulate assigned to their place of residence in India.
- Prepare the application form and supporting documents: Complete all fields carefully and arrange certificates, transcripts, recommendations, photographs and health documents in the required order.
- Follow the category-specific submission method: For 2027 Research Students, the first stage used a preliminary Microsoft Word application emailed to the Embassy by May 15. UG, KOSEN and STC applicants followed the submission instructions of their responsible Embassy or Consulate, generally using post, courier or in-person submission where specified.
- Attend the first screening: Shortlisted applicants are called for the relevant written examinations and interview. The subjects vary by scholarship category.
- Complete later-stage requirements: Research applicants who pass the first screening must contact Japanese universities for provisional acceptance and later submit placement-preference documents. Other categories proceed according to MEXT’s first and second screening process.
- Wait for MEXT’s final selection: Passing the Embassy or Consulate first screening does not by itself guarantee the scholarship. Final selection is made after the subsequent MEXT process.
Where Indian Students Submit MEXT Applications
For Undergraduate, KOSEN and Specialized Training applications, the responsible Japanese Mission depends on the applicant’s state or Union Territory. Applicants should always check the local Mission page because submission instructions can differ.
| Applicant Residence | Responsible Japanese Mission |
| West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha | Consulate-General of Japan in Kolkata |
| Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana | Consulate-General of Japan in Chennai |
| Chhattisgarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra | Consulate-General of Japan in Mumbai |
| Karnataka | Consulate-General of Japan in Bengaluru |
| Remaining states and Union Territories | Embassy of Japan in New Delhi |
MEXT Written Examination and Selection
The first screening is competitive and is not based on academic marks alone. Embassy Recommendation applicants may have to take written examinations before interview.
- Research Students: Japanese and English.
- Undergraduate Students: Japanese, English and Mathematics; science applicants also take the relevant science subjects.
- KOSEN Students: Japanese, English, Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry depending on the selected field.
- Specialized Training College Students: Japanese, English and Mathematics.
Past MEXT examination questions are published by the official Study in Japan service and are useful for understanding the level and structure of the written tests.
Important Points Before Applying
- MEXT does not charge an application fee.
- Do not send an Embassy Recommendation application directly to MEXT in Japan.
- Use only the current intake’s forms and guidelines.
- Marks requirements are not the same for all MEXT categories.
- Japanese-language knowledge can strengthen an application even where it is not compulsory at the initial stage.
- Passing India’s first screening does not guarantee final MEXT selection.
- Applicants should follow their responsible Embassy or Consulate because deadlines and submission instructions can vary by country and local mission.
FAQs
Q. Can an Indian student apply for MEXT without knowing Japanese?
Yes, Japanese proficiency is not an absolute starting requirement for every major MEXT category, and preparatory Japanese-language education is built into several routes. However, applicants must be willing to learn Japanese, the Embassy screening can include a Japanese-language examination, and the India pages state that preference may be given to applicants with Japanese proficiency.
Q. Is 80% required for every MEXT scholarship applicant from India?
No. The 80% threshold applies to the India-specific Undergraduate route for the 2027 intake. KOSEN applicants needed at least 65% in Grade 10, Specialized Training applicants needed 60% under the stated school-level rules, while Research Students generally needed 70% in the relevant degree, with 65% for humanities and social sciences.
Q. Can I apply directly to a Japanese university instead of the Embassy?
MEXT has both Embassy Recommendation and University Recommendation routes, but they are separate processes. The India deadlines discussed in this article refer to Embassy Recommendation. A university-recommendation applicant must deal with a Japanese university that has an eligible MEXT recommendation quota.
Q. Can an Indian Class 12 student apply for Medicine through the MEXT Undergraduate scholarship?
Not through the India 2027 Undergraduate recruitment described here. The Embassy of Japan in India specifically stated that Natural Science-C, which covers Medicine and Dentistry, was not offered in India for that intake.
